The night before Women's March on NYC.
About two years ago, my best friend Eloise and I started to write a new musical, A Rebel Prayer, inspired by the Russian punk performance art collective Pussy Riot. A Rebel Prayer follows a young girl, Nikita, who is visited by magical ghosts of rebel spirits (Pussy Riot) in the wake of her father’s murder. After they call for her to join their rebel army and fight against Putin’s nationalist youth army, Nikita must decide whether freedom is worth fighting for no matter the cost.
When we started writing A Rebel Prayer, we could never have imagined that less than two years later Putin would come to play such an eerie role in the US elections. Nor could we imagine that we would have a president of the United States whose policies would eerily remind us of an early rise of a fascist regime. For everyone who feels threatened under the new administration, we are with you. We will continue to use our voices for good. We will fight. We will not allow our democracy to crumble.
