Aleksandra M. Weil is a Brooklyn-based composer, singer and songwriter. Born and raised in Tashkent, Uzbekistan right as the Soviet Union collapsed, Aleksandra’s work often reflects on themes of cultural and political identity, social justice and the resilience of the human spirit. Aleksandra’s musical influences encompass a wide range of musical worlds that she’s been exposed to as a child.  From Arabic Maqams and Soviet film scores, to jazz , classical music, and Seattle, Washington's late grunge/early indie rock scene.

Recent music theater works include HENNA LEAVES, a one act opera (libretto by Laura Barati), The International House, American Opera Projects, May 2017;  A REBEL PRAYER (book & lyrics by Eloise Govedare); CDP developmental workshop, New York University; Beta Uprising, a one-act opera (libretto by Laura Barati); American Opera Projects/NYU; LOVE IN THE DARK (book by Orian Israelsohn, lyrics by Emily Roller); Dixon Place. 

Aleksandra is a co-founder of cabaret rock band Scarlet Room and the Govedare & Weil songwriting duo with collaborator Eloise Govedare.  Hailed as the ‘new artist to watch’ on Seattle Channel’s “Art Zone” with Nancy Guppy, Scarlet Room released several EP’s including Chapters A to Z, Scarlet Room and From the Shadow, and performed at venues such as The Moore Theatre, Bumbershoot Festival and Seattle’s Pride Parade. Aleksandra studied composition with world-renowned composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovski, Byron Au Yong, Mel Marvin and film scoring with Pat Irwin. Aleksandra holds an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and a BA in Women’s Studies from University of Washington.  Aleksandra is a proud script reader for the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference.
